Swim team leadership needed

Dear members,

Swim team is in serious need of folks to take on leadership roles for the 2011 season. I have managed the pool for six years and this year resigned but took on swim team. I am watered out! It is time for some others to take on swim team. We already have wonderful coaches lined up for the upcoming season. The coaches do the bulk of the work but need a parent for back up and to lead them. It is not a hard job but realistically it can take up some time. The time given is well worth it. You get to know the children, parents, lifeguards, folks from other teams, and have a good time doing it.

The Byrnwyck Blue Dolphin Team has been in place for over twenty years. Volunteers have been the key to its longevity and success. Everyone does an outstanding job of volunteering at meets and other events. We need a few to step up and continue its success.

Julie Francour and I plan to get it started again for the 2011 season. Now is the time for someone to step up and get trained to make an easy transition for the 2011 season. We are part of the Sandy Springs Swim Association. A meeting of this association is planned to recap the season on Saturday, September 11th at 2pm. This is an oppurtune time to get involved and get an idea of what being in charge entails. It has become critical that someone steps up to get involved.

We all enjoy the benefits of swim team. It does take some effort to keep it going smoothly. Please, please consider using some of your time to take the Blue Dolphins into another successful season. We need you! Do not be afraid of it! I know it seems daunting but c'mon you already manage kids, carpools, careers, etc... If I can do this you can. Julie and I will not leave you stranded and flailing. Past swim team parents have been helpful to us and they as well as us will still be available to assist.

Lost Cat

Martha Barze asked me to send this. I've sent this to outside members also, just in case:

Nanette, the cat I was house-sitting for my nephew got out and has been missing since last night. Please send a "lost and found" notice to the neighborhood. Hopefully, he will go up to someone if he gets hungry. Please ask neighbors to look under their decks. He is a scaredy cat and is very shy, so I'm sure he is hiding somewhere. His name is Storm. He is jet black with yellow eyes. His tail is very thin and he has a chirpy meow. Storm does respond to his name and is likely to come up to someone if he is not startled. Thanks for your help. Girls Junior Tennis Teams are Looking for Players

Hello everyone,

Hope you have had a great summer! The junior ALTA season is kicking up again this fall and we are looking for Byrnwyck girls to join our teams.

Our matches will begin on September 11 and run through October 23rd. We will begin practices on August 23rd.

We have 3 age groups 10U, 12U and 14U and could use Byrnwyck member girls in all 3 groups. So, if your daughter would be interested, please let me know.

The BCA Board has added the recent Board minutes to the website. You can easily find them on the front page of the site. Just click on the link and the site will take you to the .doc document. Click again on the .doc link and voila... the current Board minutes. The most current minutes will stay on the front page. Older minutes will be stored on the site in a location to be announced.

Chamblee Farmers Market

As I was cleaning out my inbox I ran across an email I had meant to send out. I did not even know there was a market in Chamblee but plan to check it out. I wish I had noticed this earlier today.

Hi, Nanette!

I just ran into this on the new Chamblee Farmers Market (opening June 19) while looking for something totally unrelated. I thought you might want to send out a notice to all of Byrnwyck. I would love to go to the Spruill Green Market in Dunwoody, but Wednesdays often are not convenient for me. This might work out better for me -- and maybe for others in Byrnwyck, as well.

It has been reported that there are a number of copperhead snakes near the pool area. Please be careful around the pool and tennis courts. Please be careful with you children around these areas.

Update on Renovation Discussions

As we closed the pool season last year, we got robust feedback from the community survey on the facilities. We know there’s always room for improvement, and many of you signed on to be part of the committee to look into how we might make address those concerns. Your Renovation Committee worked hard throughout the off-season, contemplating what we could and should do, taking into consideration a wide array of opportunities and constraints. Hopefully you followed some of the conversation by looking at the meeting minutes posted on the Byrnwyck.org discussion boards.

We focused on the priorities laid out by the survey results, including improving the bathrooms, community space and parking. Much of the discussion focused on how to meet the varying appetites for spending, while coming together with a consensus we can all be proud of. We wrote (and edited, and re-wrote, and edited again . . . ) a detailed Request for Proposals for architects to help us with the project. After screening over a dozen firms and taking four on separate site tours, we settled on one that we feel confident will be a strong partner and guide for our neighborhood.

Your Renovation Committee will be meeting with the architects next week for a first peek at their ideas, and we expect to have significant progress on the planning to report to you by the annual meeting on May 15th. We look forward to sharing ideas with you over the summer!

Survey Results and Next Steps

Thank you so much for your input in the recent Byrnwyck survey. We had incredible participation - almost 100 of you took the time to share your thoughts, suggestions, compliments and concerns. Since there was such interest shown, we wanted to give you an overview of the results and next steps in this e-mail, but also invite you to continue to conversation on our website. Many of you raised important issues that deserve thoughtful discussion, and we've gotten those started on the Byrnwyck.org boards.

RESULTS OVERVIEW

We got a lot of great feedback in the survey, and those results can be seen in full as an Excel file on www.byrnwyck.org in the discussion board topics.

Specifically on the question of upgrades, almost 80% of us want to have some work done on the facilities, but the level of expense people are interested in varies. About 17% want "touch-ups" (up to $50k), 20% want "minor renovation" ($50k - $200k), 18% want "overhaul" ($200k and $400k), and 16% want a "major overhaul" ($400k - $750k). About 6% want a complete first class overhaul of $750k+.

While almost 40% are interested in spending $200k+ on the facilites, we heard from many people concerned about the economy or opposed to any improvements. Since any of these improvements must be voted on and passed by 2/3 of voting members (Inside Byrnwyck), the group of volunteers that has decided to work on this will certainly take everyone's input into consideration as we develop options to present to the community.

NEXT STEPS
Several of you have kindly offered to take part in the process, and we have set our first meeting for this Sunday, September 13th at 8pm at the Starbucks at Johnson Ferry and Ashford Dunwoody. All are welcome.

If you have any other thoughts, please use the discussion boards at Byrnwyck.org as your main vehicle to share them so that everyone has equal access to the conversations. And of course, the Byrnwyck Board of Directors is always eager to hear your thoughts and concerns directly.

Byrnwyck Pets

Dear neighbors,

I added a photo album entitled "Byrnwyck Pets" to the website. Go to members and then choose photo albums to find it. I also realized that you do not need to send me a photo. You can upload your own Fido pic. It's very easy. When you get to the photo album page just follow the instructions and put your information in the caption area. Space is a little limited there so just make sure you put the important basics. Of course, if you have a photo editing program you could add info in the picture, too. I encourage all pet owners to add a photo even if you think yours could never get away. I keep a close eye on my two but they have been know to escape and go for an adventure. Usually, to eat the Little's flowers.

If you have any trouble adding the information or feel uncomfortable with it I am happy to assist or do it for you.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before. Well, better late than never.

Empty nester discount

There have been a few questions about the 'Empty Nest' discount. Please be aware that the following is outlined in the BCA bylaws.

If you qualify, please provide the necessary documentation with your paid invoice.

Please note the discount does not apply retroactively.

'A permanent member who executes the member declaration not later than November 1, 2000 shall be eligible for Senior Membership status at any time during their ownership of a Membership Lot upon presentation of evidence to the Board of Directors that : (a) at least one Owner of such Lot is at least fifty-eight (58) years or older; and (b) no person under the age of eighteen (18) years resides in such Owner's dwelling more than six (6) months a year. No other Members shall be eligible for Senior Membership status. The Board shall have the authority to establish fees for Senior Membership as set forth herein.'
